Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about privacy, encryption, files, calls and what happens when you close the tab.

Basics

6 questions

What NulBridge is, what it costs and how a conversation starts.

01

What is NulBridge?

NulBridge is a free web app for private one-to-one conversations. You open a private link or enter a 6-digit code, and two browsers connect directly to each other over WebRTC. You can chat, send files and make voice or video calls with end-to-end encryption, without an account and without installing anything.

02

Do I need an account or an app?

No. NulBridge runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to download, and nobody asks for your name, email address or phone number.

03

Is NulBridge free?

Yes. NulBridge is free to use and never asks for payment details or a subscription.

04

How do I start a conversation?

There are two ways. Create a private link and send it to the other person through any channel you trust, or get a 6-digit code and read it out to them. As soon as they open the link or enter the code, your browsers connect and the chat opens on both screens.

05

Can more than two people join a session?

No. Every session connects exactly two browsers. Once the other person has joined, the session refuses any further connection attempts.

06

Do both people need to be online at the same time?

Yes. Messages travel directly between the two browsers, so there is no server holding messages for later delivery. Keep your tab open until the other person has joined.

Privacy & security

6 questions

What is stored, who can see what, and how the encryption works.

01

Are my messages or files stored anywhere?

No. Messages and files exist only in the memory of the two browser tabs. Nothing is written to a server or a database, and when either tab closes the conversation is gone for good. There is no history and no recovery.

02

How are messages encrypted?

Each session creates fresh ECDH P-256 key pairs in both browsers. The shared secret is combined with the secret from your private link, or with your 6-digit code, through HKDF-SHA-256, and every message and file chunk is then encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it leaves your device. This runs on top of the DTLS encryption that WebRTC already applies to the connection.

03

What is the safety code, and should I check it?

After you connect, both screens show a 12-character safety code. If the connection has not been tampered with, the two codes are identical. Compare them with the other person over a separate channel, such as in person or on a phone call. Matching codes mean nobody is sitting in the middle of your session. Checking matters most when you connect with a 6-digit code.

04

Can NulBridge or its servers read my messages?

No. Encryption keys are created and kept in your browser and are never sent to any server. The signaling server only relays the connection setup, such as network addresses and public keys, and the 6-digit code service only stores which code points to which waiting session. Codes stop working after 10 minutes and are deleted shortly after.

05

Is NulBridge anonymous?

NulBridge never asks who you are. However, like every WebRTC app, a direct connection reveals each side’s IP address to the other person, and the signaling server sees connection metadata such as IP addresses. Only connect with people you are comfortable sharing that with, or use a trusted VPN.

06

What happens when I close the tab?

The session ends immediately for both people. Keys, messages and received files are discarded from memory and cannot be recovered. Files you already downloaded stay wherever you saved them.

Files & calls

2 questions

Sending files and making voice or video calls.

01

How large can files be?

Up to 500 MB per file. Files are sent in encrypted chunks directly to the other browser, so the speed depends on both connections. Very large files can be slow on phones with limited memory.

02

Can I make voice and video calls?

Yes. Once connected, either person can start a voice or video call, and the other person can accept or decline it. Calls use WebRTC’s built-in DTLS-SRTP encryption and go directly between your devices whenever the network allows. Your browser will ask for microphone and camera permission first.

Troubleshooting

3 questions

When a connection, a code or a phone won’t cooperate.

01

Why won’t my connection go through?

Most failures are caused by strict firewalls or carrier-grade NAT that block direct peer-to-peer connections. Run the connection check to see what your browser and network support. Some corporate and mobile networks only work through a TURN relay, which the operator of the site can configure.

02

My 6-digit code says it was not found or has expired.

Each code works once and expires after 10 minutes. Ask the other person to generate a new code and enter it promptly. After several wrong attempts, code entry pauses for a few minutes to stop guessing.

03

Does NulBridge work on phones?

Yes, in current mobile browsers. Keep NulBridge in the foreground during a session: mobile browsers may pause background tabs, which can drop the connection.
